Culture and Wellbeing: Sustainability

Guide to support events in the Library, College and the wider environment.
About Sustainability
In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Sustainability is in broad terms an ethical concept that deals with ensuring that our environmental, economic and social behaviour now secures the future for the generations to follow.
While action is required on a global level there is an emphasis on individuals to commit to doing their part.
The Library has committed to our own targets to improve the sustainability of our service.
We are switching off electrical appliances at night where possible.
Ensure all withdrawn stock is re-used or re-cycled.
Choosing local suppliers who have a commitment to improving their sustainability.
Continuing with a digital first approach to resources, communication and events.
This means :
  • always checking for digital versions of books and journals.
  • using Library Online social media to communicate our news, events, guides and announcements.
  • offering online chat, teams, email, and telephone support to cut down on travel.
