The Film Club was introduced to promote and enlighten students & staff to the film resources we have available in the Library – DVD’s and through Planet e-stream on the intranet. This is so we could increase the usage of these resources and just make people aware that they are there. The Film Club consists mainly of a monthly blog – which showcases four films a month within a pre-determined theme (which sometimes ties into the greater College theme of the month – if applicable). I generally try to focus on less popular films that not as many people would have seen or have fewer views on e-stream already. In recent months, I have added a video preview of the blog for YouTube/Instagram, and tried to start a Film Club showing once a month of one film from/connected to the theme of the blog.
Problems
Problems encountered include: the blog becoming a little too long to read for some. Finding time to create the video blog preview every month; and failing to attract any students to the first few film showings. I am also a little concerned about running low on films to use [in the DVD Collection at least] in the not too distant future.
Solutions
I will look at the structure of the blog and see what I can do to trim the contents down - e.g. list less actors from the films, streamline the relevant plot points that get readers interested. I will also look into how I could make creating the video blog easier and faster. As for the showings – I propose more marketing/advertising and greater communication with the film department and the SU [with help from Haydn/James]. I would also suggest making sure there are no conflicts with other activities being run in the College at the same time [there seemed to be an SU run Film Club finishing just before mine last year]. Another idea to generate interest and the student’s perspective on the blog/showings would be to send out a survey/add some questions to the ‘Stop and Ask’ surveys about potential showings. There have been mentions of a possible Film podcast conducted by the Library, which could be more promotion for the film collection. The possibility of using the Library’s Netflix account could increase the number of films available to show. It will also be helpful if we could have a more comprehensive review of viewing figures on the blog and associated posts/events each month.
