Distance Learners: The Library

Using the David Hockney Library

Anyone who is a registered student of the college can use the Library and all of our print and other resources. This also applies to students who don't don't have timetabled lessons at College or do so infrequently.

So, if you live nearby, or come to Bradford regularly you may want to consider visiting the Library.

You will need to bring your student card to enter the building. So if you have not been given a card and would like one, contact your tutor or college registrations.

The Library in housed within the David Hockney Building, which is the main college building in Bradford.

This is on Great Horton Road, just 10 -15 minutes walk from either Bradford Interchange the main train and bus station or Bradford Foster Square train station.

Books and DVDs

Books

The Library has a collection of nearly 70,000 books covering all the subjects that are taught at College, as well as a reading collection of books that can be read for pleasure. These books can be found using the online Library catalogue, you can use this to search for a book by it's title, author or subject.

The books are arranged in the Library using Dewey Decimal Classification. This is a number sequence from 000-999, with each subject having it own number, so all the book on the same subject should be near each other

DVDs

The Library also has a collection of DVDs that you can borrow.

These can mostly be found in the film collection.

Borrowing Items

As a member of College you are allowed to borrow books from the Library using our self-service kiosks. You can borrow up to twenty itemss at a time, with most of these having an initial return date of two weeks later.

We use an auto renewals system that means a week before the items are due back if no-one else has requested the item it renews for another two weeks. This will happen up to twenty times.

We will send you a message to your College email about a week before an item is due back. If you do not bring an item back requested we do charge fines of 50p per day as the most likely reason for an item not to be renewed is that it is needed by a another student

Distance Learner Scheme

The Library offers a scheme for students on Distance Learning courses who want to borrow books but are worried that the two week loan period might mean they are unlikely to be able to return the book when requested.

The scheme allows the students who join it to borrow books to the end of the current term rather than for the standard two weeks and are only allowed to borrow ten items rather than twenty and they only automatically renew three times rather than twenty.

You can also request items using the Library catalogue and collect them when you are in the Library rather than other students who can request items if all copies are on loan. Items will only be held for seven working days so please only request them if you are going to be able to collect them.

If a Distance Learner lives more than two hours away from College we are willing to post items out to them, though the borrower will be expected to post them back to us if asked to return them. To ask for an item to be posted please email askalibrarian@bradfordcollege.ac.uk.

If you wish to join the scheme please ask to see your subject Librarian, when you are in the Library or email askalibrarian@bradfordcollege.ac.uk..

Print Journals in the Library
