Stop and Ask is one way the Library uses to find out the opinion of students abut the College. Members of library staff go out and about in College, usually at lunchtime when there should be plenty of people around. They will then have a chat with whoever is willing, about their opinions of the Library and it services. This allows us to see what is working well and how we can improve. As the Stop and Ask takes the form of an informal chat it allows us to focus on the needs of the person we are talking to.
As our Stop and Asks happen all around College we have the bonus of talking to students who don't necessarily use the library, and as well as asking their opinions, we can let them know about our services and how they can benefit from them.
We try and carry these out at least once a term, always looking at a different aspect of the Library Services. In November, as it was the start of a new College year, we talked to students, about if they knew about the Library services, whether they had used them and their opinion of them. This also gave us an opportunity to introduce the Library to those who might not have had a formal induction.
Of the students we talked to in the David Hockney, Lister, ATC and Trinity Green buildings, 79% knew about the Library, while 50% had used and liked it. Students in the ATC weren't happy with the library provided in their new building, following this we have moved the ATC Library to a more prominent position and given it a makeover. If we just look at students from the other buildings those who had used and liked the Library was much higher, 70% in fact.
We are carrying out another Stop and Ask at the moment, looking at whether students know about the one to one support the Library offers, such as support from Librarians and the Library Academic and Practice Coaches. Future Stop and Ask will look at our Library Online website and our Online resources.
So, if you are asked about the Library please answer as it will help us improve the Service we offer you.
