With GCSEs around the corner, we know plenty of students are studying hard and stretching their minds to the limit to ace their upcoming exams. Therefore, you may be pleased that we have a fantastic new book in the library!
It is called ‘How to Ace Your Exams’ by Matthew Burton. It is an inspirational book with amazing techniques for organising your revision time, acing your revision process and memorising information, being successful on the exam day, and dealing with the aftermath. It backs up its revision techniques with a light dose of psychology and how the brain works. As such, the 25 secrets may not be secret for long as the book is too helpful not to borrow from the library.
Here are three quick takeaways from Part Two’s 'Ace Revision' section on remembering information and revising that I enjoyed.
Number 1
The ‘Blurting’ technique runs your brain to its maximum and encourages you to put information into your long-term memory. After revising a topic, you grab a piece of paper, set a five-minute timer, and blurt out everything onto the paper.
Number 2
The ‘Hack your brain’ section is interesting as it reveals the brain’s sheer power and capacity to remember information. However, to do it effectively, there is a catch: you must revise it in an ordered and structured way. This is because your brain uses different areas to do and remember different things, so ‘chunking’ information together will help you, as will using ‘Mnemonics’ (see Britannica: Mnemonics for more detail).
Number 3
This one is for the visual thinkers out there. ‘Memory Place’ is where you recreate the topic you are studying in your mind, and imagine it either at your home or in a place familiar to you. Matthew Burton’s example is recreating Macbeth’s scenes in different rooms of your house, so the three witches could be in your bedroom while Lady Macbeth is scrubbing the blood off her hands in your kitchen. This is a very powerful technique.
