It is always interesting to find new ways in which to promote and showcase the Library.
It is one thing to provide the resources needed by students, but quite another to actually make them aware of them or get them to actually visit the Library to find them.
When Technology and Media Services told me about the drones they had just taken possession of I saw a great opportunity to get footage of the library which would otherwise have been unachievable.
I omit all the details regarding the basic flight instruction and training I did and we will just accept that they were happy to lend me a drone.
The drone is a Ryze Tello, which is a fairly small but robust device with a respectable camera which was more than suitable for capturing the images and video I required.
So my latest libarry project was rady to begin as I started to focus on creating a mini-library of library drone footage which could then be used on social media, at promotional events and in library inductions.
As the ideas of how the footage could be used developed so did the ideas of what footage could be captured and what vantage points of the library would have been otherwise unavailable.
This is not a review of the Tello drone but rather how my drone idea developed and the observations I have made on how well my endeavours panned out.
It may also serve as a starting point for anyone else wishing to embark on such a foolhardy project for their library.
Once I had installed the Android app it was time for me to attempt connection and then make my first attempt at a take off.
Once I had reestablished my familiarity with the flight functionality I decided I could be adventurous and try to capture some images and short pieces of video.
My first test was to take off and then see how easy it would be to navigate the drone between a row of shelves.
Once I had undertaken a few successful short simple trip between the shelves I got adveturous with a trip over the balcony and recorded my flight from the Library Information Desk out over the void.
I then got slightly more bold and navigated the drone on a very short trip over some of the shelving in the library.
