Many of our books are also available online as e-books. Some e-book platforms have in-built accessibility options. They may allow you to change the text size, background and font colour for example, or may otherwise be adapted for use with screen reading or read aloud software.
The easiest way to find and access e-books is to search the Library Catalogue, just like you would for printed books.
• You can search by author, title or keyword.
• You can also limit your search to just e-books by selecting E-book from the Item Type drop down menu.
• If the book is available online click on the "Click here to access" link.
• If you are off campus you will need to enter your college IT username and password.
The majority of our e-books are available on three main platforms or websites – Ebook Central, VLeBooks and O'Reilly Learning Platform. The accessibility features may vary between the different e-book platforms. For more information on the accessibility features of each platform including their accessibility statements please go to E-books and Online Resources
RNIB Bookshare supports learners with a print disability to access the curriculum by providing accessible textbooks and resources . This includes learners who cannot read standard print, including those with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and autism or who are blind or partially sighted.
If you have a visual disability you can register yourself with RNIB Bookshare and request a book; or you can ask the Library or Disability Services to try and get hold of particular title for you.
Go to https://www.rnibbookshare.org for more information.
We have a small selection of Large Print books in the Reading Zone. A list of our large print books is available here or you can ask at the counter.
Most of the Young Adult Fiction is published in dyslexia friendly font with cream coloured paper. We also have general fiction in a special collection in the Reading Zone. A full list of dyslexia-friendly books is available here.
There is also a small but growing collection of books using the Dyslexie font, which you can find here.
If your book isn't available as an e-book or through the RNIB, we may be able to order an e-book version or ask the publisher to supply an electronic file. Under copyright, you are also able to scan the whole of one of our print books. This will mean that the book is readable through other software.
As part of Disability Services, the Adapted Materials Service provides large print, braille, tactile and re-formatted course materials for supported students with Visual Impairments (VI) that require materials in specific formats.
