According to the Reading Agency , "Reading needs to be an everyday part of our lives". Reading for pleasure is not only important for our heath and wellbeing but also has social benefits. "Reading increases our understanding of our own identity, improves empathy and gives us an insight into the world view of others".
Reading for pleasure can also help improve your English language skills, increase your vocabulary and could help improve your grades for your academic subjects.
The Quick Read titles area great starting point for students learning English as a second language.
Book Prizes and Awards
Awarded annually to the best novel of the year written in English and published in the UK or Ireland.
CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals
The CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are the UK's oldest and most prestigious children's book awards, recognising outstanding writing and illustration in books for children and young people.
Costa Book Awards
The Costa Book Awards is one of the UK's most prestigious and popular literary prizes and recognises some of the most enjoyable books of the year.
The Daggers - Crime Writers Association
Currently ten Daggers are awarded annually by the CWA and are regarded by the publishing world as the foremost British awards for crime-writing.
Women's Prize for Fiction
One of the most prestigious literary awards in the world, the Women’s Prize for Fiction was known as the Orange Prize for Fiction between 1996 and 2012 and the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction between 2014 and 2017. It celebrates excellence, originality and accessibility in women’s writing from throughout the world.
Using Other Libraries
Public Libraries are an excellent resource for reading for pleasure. As well as print books they also provide access to books, magazines and comics online.
